Collierville family raising chickens in their backyard | News
MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - In Deanna Caswell's backyard in Collierville, you can hear chickens sounding off when it is their feeding time.
Chickens are being raised in the middle of suburbia in communities all over the country, including the Mid-South.
Caswell said her family got the chickens because they usually lay one egg a day. She said the eggs from the five chickens she is raising are better than store-bought eggs. Caswell said her chickens are raised on diets different from a chicken diet at an egg factory.
Caswell said one of the main reasons she took up raising chickens was to teach her children about animals.
"I wanted them to learn about the life cycle and learn ... where food comes from," she said. "I don't want them to think it just comes from the store."
Caswell said she began raising chickens three years ago and has not had any complaints from her neighbors. She and her children said raising chickens has made them famous in their neighborhood.
Caswell has written a book about raising chickens in the suburbs. To learn more, click here.
