Water skiers, wake boarders invited to 'freeze' for a good cause

(WMC-TV) – If you have thick skin, a passion for water skiing, and a sense of adventure – we have just the event for you.

Water skiers, wake boarders, and even barefoot skiers are welcome to brave the icy waters of the Mighty Mississippi on January 1 to help make a 13-year-old girl’s dream come true.

The Collierville Water Ski Club is hosting the 36th annual Ski Freeze event on New Year’s Day.  The event will raise money for The Dream Factory of Memphis, which grants dreams to children ages three to 18, who are diagnosed with critical or chronic illnesses.

For a $30 donation, you can cut through the wake of a boat provided by Memphis Boat Center, who will pull participants through the near-freezing Mississippi waters.

Money raised at this year’s event will be used to grant 13-year-old Haylie K’s dream.  Haylie is diagnosed with Complex Dysautonomia, an illness that causes dizziness, fainting spells, fatigue, nerve pain, and

Collierville police offer tips to prevent burglaries

The Collierville Police Department is being proactive about making sure residents stay safe, and keep their homes and belongings safe this holiday season.

Two burglaries in the area of Houston Levee Road and Wolf River Boulevard prompted the police department to send a reminder that certain clues in your yard and around your home might send a message to burglars.

Police believe that the two burglaries that happened Friday, December 7, were done by the same suspect.  In both cases, the homeowners’ phone lines were ripped from the exterior wall in order to disable their alarms.  The suspect then entered the homes by prying open windows.

Investigators believe the suspect stayed in the neighborhood and waited until they saw the residents leave the homes before forcing their way inside.

Glass blowing demo lures hundreds to Collierville Square

Hundreds of people paid a visit to the Collierville Town Square over the weekend to learn a little bit about an ancient art.

Staff and students from Southern Illinois University performed glassblowing demonstrations at the free two-day event, which was hosted by the Morton Museum of Collierville History.

During the demonstration, Assistant Professor Cortney Boyd, graduate student Rudy Faulkner, and undergrad Dani Patrick made a variety of treasure, ranging from vases to ornaments.

“People have said, ‘Let’s bring them back next year,’ Mortin Museum Director Erin Narloch told The Collierville Herald.

Narloch said more than 300 people showed up to watch the glass blowing demonstration.  Some people even left with a souvenir.

Barbara and Tim Johnston of Collierville watched as the glass blowers made a red and green vase.  The Johnstons knew they wanted it before it was even finished.

“We watched them the entire ho

The Chickasaw Council of Boy Scouts are putting their forces behind the Mid-South Food Bank this holiday season.

Scouting for Food is an effort to feed families in need.

One in five Mid-Southerners struggle with food insecurity - that's a lack of sufficient food to meet basic needs.

"I think were going to have a record year. Not only have we filled up all the bins this year at this location, but we also picked up North Mississippi.

They had eight troop groups down there," said David Stephens of the Mid-South food bank.

This year, Kroger is also lending a hand by offering eight food collection sites.

The Mid-South Food Bank delivers more than one million pounds of food per month.

Mayor Stan Joyner is taking a break this weekend from the municipal schools fight, in an effort to spread some Christmas cheer – on the stage.

The Collierville mayor will make a special appearance with his granddaughter in the Collierville Ballet’s The Nutcracker.

The show features more than 80 local performers of all different ages.

If you look closely, you may be able to spot Mayor Joyner with his granddaughter as part of the party scene during the opening part of Act One.  The duo will be participating in the Saturday evening show at 7 p.m. and the Sunday afternoon show at 2:30 p.m.

"My granddaughter is 3 years old and and in a ballet class at Ballet Collierville that is putting on the production," said Mayor Stan Joyner.  "They found out that she is my granddaughter and asked if I would participate. Of course, I said yes!"

Olympic gold medalist sets up shop in Collierville

She is known for the gold medal she earned in Atlanta, and the silver medal she brought home from Barcelona.  But now, Olympian Rochelle Stevens is hitting the ground running in a different way -- in Collierville.

Stevens opened her business, “Rochelle Health & Wellness”, with her mother in Memphis 14 years ago, when she was training for the 1992 Summer Olympics.

The spa, inspired by the mother-daughter duo’s trip to France, will open at its new location on Poplar View Lane this weekend.

“We were getting pampered every day at the spa,” Rochelle Stevens told The Collierville Herald.  “And I said, ‘Wow, this is a nice business to have one day.’”

That day came and now, her business will serve a new clientele in Collierville.
