YoLo's Italian gelato redefines "dessert"

YoLo's Italian gelato redefines "dessert"

Don't call it "ice cream."

Don't call it "soft serve."

Don't order dessert at your favorite restaurant after dinner.

You should order an authentic Italian gelato at YoLo instead (http://www.yolofroyo.com/).

Will Johnson is YoLo's executive chef at its Midtown Memphis location, 6 S. Cooper St. He said gelato is an Italian dessert with its origins in Rome. It boasts a smoother texture than yogurt.

Creamier than ice cream, without all the cream.

"It's got about ten percent less milk-fat than your typical ice cream," said Chef Johnson. "We chill it colder. We have an extremely long aging time on the base that we make. It's about six hours. It blooms just like you would a bread-starter."

Start your mouth-watering.

Top Chef Masters contestant Chef John Currence owns a number of restaurants in Oxford, Mississippi.  This weekend I ate at Big Bad Breakfast.   The menu offers breakfast like poached eggs with country ham and oatmeal pancakes with strawberries.  It also offers lunch like burgers, griddle-fried hot dogs and Coca-Cola brined fried chicken.   It's the perfect place to eat brunch.

Groundhog Day could mean free eats at Chick-fil-A

Groundhog Day could mean free eats at Chick-fil-A

It could be a double dose of good news Groundhog Day morning, if the groundhog predicts an early spring.

If the groundhog doesn't see his shadow, customers won't have to pay for a spicy chicken biscuit at Memphis and North Mississippi area Chick-fil-A restaurants.

The giveaway will be Wednesday, Feb. 2.

A portion of all sales from the Groundhog Day giveaway will be donated to MIFA.
